Malawi’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, has urged higher education institutions to expand access while maintaining academic standards and ensuring graduates acquire skills relevant to the country’s development needs.
The minister said universities must prepare students for changing labour-market demands while supporting Malawi’s long-term development ambitions under Malawi 2063.
The call highlights the need for universities to balance access to higher education with quality teaching, practical skills, research and stronger links between academic programmes and employment opportunities.
For students, relevant education can improve readiness for work and entrepreneurship. For employers, it can help develop the skilled workforce needed to expand businesses and introduce new technologies.
Why it matters: Malawi needs higher education that produces capable graduates while giving more young people an opportunity to learn and contribute to national development.
