The Ministry of Education has launched an initiative to provide 13,500 bicycles to vulnerable learners across Malawi, aiming to reduce the distance-related barriers that keep some children from attending school regularly.
The Mobility’s Role in Reducing Child Marriages project is being implemented by CAMFED and World Bicycle Relief, with funding from the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
At the launch in Zomba, Minister Bright Msaka said long journeys to school can contribute to lateness, fatigue, absenteeism and school dropout, particularly among girls in rural communities.
The bicycles are intended to help learners reach school more safely and consistently, giving them more time to study and participate in lessons.
Why it matters: Better access to transport can support school attendance, reduce barriers to completing education and improve opportunities for girls.
