Malawi’s Catholic bishops have welcomed the Archdiocesan Synod of Lilongwe as an important step towards a more participatory Church that listens to the concerns and experiences of its members.
The General Assembly, held from 20 April to 1 May at St Kizito Parish in Area 47, brought together clergy, religious congregations and lay representatives to discuss the Church’s mission and future direction.
The synodal journey, launched in 2022, focused on listening, dialogue and discerning the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Discussions covered marriage and family life, young people, children, liturgy and the sacraments.
Auxiliary Bishop Vincent Mwakhwawa stressed that Church leaders must listen to the challenges and proposals of the faithful. The assembly also considered accountability, transparency and responsible management of Church resources.
Why it matters: The synod highlights the importance of involving ordinary members in Church decisions and ensuring that pastoral leadership responds to real community needs.
