Malawi has launched the Nzika Digital ID Wallet, a digital platform designed to help citizens access and manage official identity documents, while the government has announced the removal of expiry dates from National Identity Cards.

The initiative was launched in Lilongwe through collaboration between the National Registration Bureau and the United Nations Development Programme, with support from international partners.

The wallet is designed to hold digital credentials, including national identity cards, birth certificates and marriage certificates. It aims to make identity verification more convenient and support access to digital public services.

The government also announced that national identity cards would no longer expire from 16 September 2026, removing the need for periodic renewal solely because a card had reached its expiry date.

However, digital identity systems must be implemented with appropriate safeguards to protect personal information and ensure that people without smartphones or reliable internet access are not excluded.

Why it matters: Digital identity could make public services more accessible, reduce administrative burdens and support Malawi’s broader digital transformation.
