Attorney General Frank Mbeta has taken over the legal representation of Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman and Parliament in a court case challenging the establishment of 12 parliamentary committees.

The case concerns committees established to investigate alleged corruption and governance concerns in public institutions. The legal challenge was filed by concerned citizen Austin Mkoka.

According to reporting by The Times Group and Nation Online, Mbeta had initially joined the case as an interested party before assuming responsibility for representing the Speaker and Parliament.

The development raises important questions about the legal responsibilities of the Attorney General, parliamentary independence and the procedures governing the establishment and operation of parliamentary committees.

The court proceedings will determine the issues before the judiciary. Allegations under investigation should not be treated as proven wrongdoing unless established through the appropriate legal process.

Why it matters: The case highlights the relationship between Parliament, government legal representation and the courts in Malawi’s system of governance.
