The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) postponed fresh parliamentary elections in Nsanje South and Mangochi East that had been scheduled for 29 September 2026.
The commission attributed the postponement to its inability to access essential electoral equipment and materials stored at its Njewa warehouse in Lilongwe. The warehouse had reportedly been sealed following enforcement of a rent-related warrant.
The two constituencies had been left without elected parliamentary representatives following court decisions that nullified previous election results.
The postponement raised concerns among civil society organisations about voters’ ability to regain representation and participate fully in democratic processes.
MEC indicated that a revised electoral calendar would depend on regaining access to the stored materials and establishing a workable schedule.
Why it matters: Timely elections are essential to ensure citizens have representation in Parliament and can hold elected leaders accountable.
