Fuel shortages are adding to Malawi’s cost-of-living challenges, with transport expenses rising sharply in September. An ECAM assessment found that average monthly transport spending for a household of six increased from K140,000 in August to K160,000 in September.
The 14.3 percent increase highlights how fuel availability can affect more than motorists. Higher operating costs can place pressure on minibus fares, goods distribution and the prices consumers pay for everyday products.
Transport operators and businesses face the challenge of managing expenses while customers already have limited purchasing power. If the pressure persists, higher delivery costs could feed into prices across the economy.
The latest figures underline the importance of reliable fuel supplies for both household budgets and business activity.
